Still coping from loss, 41-year-old Thorne buys a building to keep himself busy and rent out. His first tenants are mother Elise and daughter Lux, a pair with unfortunate circumstances that lead Elise to pay rent with her body. When she finds herself a better life, she leaves Lux to keep living in Thorne's building under the guise of building her independence. That turns out to be harder for Lux, leading her to use Thorne's apparent loneliness to her advantage.
